How Scran food reports work
A transparent guide to price parsing, samples, dates and the limits of menu comparisons.
What is counted
Prices and portions
Numerical analysis accepts a single positive £ amount, or a named small, medium, large, regular or dimensional size option when the base price is empty. Ranges, “from”, supplements, set-menu wording, market prices and unrecognised options remain visible but are excluded from numerical summaries. No missing price is filled in.
Why venue-weighted medians?
For a dish report we take the median qualifying listed amount at each venue, then the median of those venue medians. Each priced venue therefore has one vote. This reduces the influence of venues with many variants. Different portions, recipes and included sides still make these descriptive menu ranges, not a cost-of-living index. Explicit size reports restrict the calculation to that size.
Samples and search indexing
Dish guides are created when at least three venues have usable prices. Guides with fewer than five priced venues remain accessible to readers but are marked noindex and excluded from sitemaps. Coverage reports describe the directory itself; none claims every restaurant has been surveyed.
Dates and dietary evidence
Each row shows the menu enrichment date, falling back to its source-check date. The report compilation date is separate. Dietary reports require an explicit stored menu label and suppress contradictory animal-name claims; they exclude inferred and optional labels. They cannot establish allergy safety.
Downloads and corrections
Report CSVs contain the same public venue and menu fields shown in the tables, with source URLs and record dates. They contain no private contact research. Contact a venue for current prices and use the source link to check corrections. Menu text remains attributable to its original publisher; downloads do not grant a new licence to source material.
Research that informed the design
We reviewed Menu Price Index’s observation method, 777menu’s restaurant-level comparisons and Realytics’ matched-item approach. These informed the choice to expose source records, avoid menu-size weighting and reserve inflation claims for matched observations. Their menu data is not imported.
